Chapter Twelve

James

“Yes, I hear you loud and clear, sir.” I slam the phone down, lean back in my chair, and try to collect myself.

The pressures of this job can feel overwhelming at times. Right now, the board is breathing down my throat. They want this project complete so they can move forward with an acquisition, the timeline given keeps shrinking. This is a nice distraction from the chaos I felt all weekend whenever I thought about Peyton. I have never enjoyed myself with a woman the way I did with her. I almost embarrassed myself and came the second her mouth touched me. Yet the problem still remains, I do not want a relationship and she is still my employee. My computer dings with an incoming email, pulling me out of my thoughts.

Good morning, Mr. Davis,

I just spoke with Jim on the phone. They will be coming to Chicago to meet with us on Tuesday of next week. I believe we have everything we need ready for the meeting. I will let Angela know so she can book the executive board room for the meeting.

Please let me know if there is anything else you would like me to prepare for this meeting.

Peyton

I am disappointed that I cannot think of a reason for us to see each other until the meeting, which is eight days away. Come to think of it, I have not been down to speak with Lance, her boss, since the start of the project. I should go down there to see how he is managing with Peyton’s focus entirely on this project. I spin around in my chair and stand up, looking at the window that Peyton was leaning against the other day, knowing I will never see that spot in the same light.

As I stroll out of the elevator, I adjust my tie and look down at myself, making sure I look put together. I am not sure why I care what I look like all of a sudden. I make it down to the fifty-eight floor and my stomach flutters as I approach Peyton’s office, willing myself not to peek inside. I lose that battle when I glance in her office to find her on the phone, talking animatedly while she throws her head back and laughs. Just when she peeks up and spots me, I stumble over myself, recovering before I completely lose my balance. The best idea I could come up with was to nod and keep walking. This is not me; I am never this clumsy and out of sorts.

I head into Lance’s office and tap on the door. He looks up from his computer, greeting me with a smile.

“James! To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Just thought I would pay you a visit, see how everything is running in your department now that you are down a team member.” I continue into his office and take a seat across from him.

“It’s certainly busy! We put a large workload on Peyton, that much has become obvious.
